The Kushiro River is known as a canoeist dream because there are no factories located along its banks. The river affords the opportunity to explore the wetlands inaccessible by car or on foot. At times, you will encounter local wildlife such as tancho cranes, Ezo shika deer, and white-tailed eagles. [Reservations required] (takes 90 minutes or more, depending on the tour)

Kottaro Observatory has unobstructed views of the old wetland as there are very little Japanese alder trees growing there. You may also be able to spot a tancho crane’s nest. (Takes 20 minutes)

Located on the western side of Kushiro Shitsugen Wetland, this promenade provides visitors the chance to view the wetland scenery at eye level. There are three routes to explore based on your time constraints, spanning from a 500 meter route to a 3km route. Along the wooden promenade you will find local vegetation and heike botaru fireflies in the evening and night in mid to late June. (Takes between 15 minutes and 1 hours 30 minutes)

Kushiro Shitsugen Wetland Observatory was built to resemble tussock grass, a form of vegetation found in the wetland. Inside you will find information about the vegetation and a display featuring the mysterious Sakhalin taimen and other aquatic life.
The Satellite Observatory found at the mid-point of the facility’s connected wooden promenade offers commanding views of the wetland. (required time: 20 minutes if only touring the observatory or 90 minutes if touring the observatory and walking to Satellite Observatory)
