Mt Hakuto lies south of Akanko Onsen, reaching a peak height of 950 m. From spring to autumn, the 2 km long trail, which starts from the Akankohan Ski Area and ends at Mt. Hakuto Observatory, is open to the public. The trail has many attractions on the way to the observatory such as fields of beautiful alpine plants and volvanic mud pools, making the place an ideal spots for day-picnic. The observatory commands a breathtaking view of Lake Akan and Mt. Oakan. On summer and autumn mornings, you might encounter "sea of clouds" from the mountaintop. The return trip takes about 1 hour and a half.
