Bokke Walking Trail

Bokke Walking Trail The Bokke Nature Trail allows visitors to closely experience the bounty of volcanoes and surrounding nature.

The trail entrance is conveniently located adjacent to Akanko Onsen. Strolling along the trail, you'll find yourself immersed in nature, amidst a dense growth of trees aged over a hundred years. With a little luck, you may spot wildlife such as Siberian red squirrel and Hokkaido deer, and you may even hear the tapping of woodpeckers.

The highlight of the trail is "bokke" which is a remain of craters erupted about tens of thousand years ago. The word "bokke" is derived from the Ainu word meaning "to bubble up". Volcanic gases bubble up to the surface. As you near a bokke, a hint of sulfur smells in the gas. You'll also feel the ground surface temperature is warmer due to geothermal heat, which creates a very unique environment where is home to various creatures.
