The Akanko Onsen spa resort is considered to be the origin of hand baths that are now popping up at other spa resorts across Japan. The hand bath next to Katosato Crafts Shop features a rock basin. The Owl Hand Bath outside of Kankodo is made of hallowed out Japanese elm. The name owl originates from the Blakiston’s fish owl considered to be a protector of the Ainu Kotan village.
