Itsukushima Shrine
Itsukushima Shrine has been respected as a guardian deity of Kushiro's citizens since the Edo period. In the early Meiji period, the shrine was moved the original settlement site of Kushiro (present day Yonemachi). From this elevated spot overlooking the sea, Itsukushima continues to watch over Kushiro. Seven kami (deities) are enshrined, including deities of the sacred mountains Mt Oakan-dake and Mt Meakan-dake, and Konpira Daijin, the guardian deity of seafarers. In particular, many people pay respects to this shrine at the new year.
