Stroll the "Bokke Walking Trail", and enjoy a walk amidst Lake Akan's vibrant nature!
The Bokke Nature Trail allows visitors to closely experience the wonders of nature and the power of volcanoes.
A trail entrance is conveniently located adjacent adjacent to Akanko Onsen. Strolling along the trail, you will find yourself immersed in nature, amidst a dense growth of trees more than aged more than a hundred years. With a little luck, you may spot wildlife such as Hokkaido squirrels and Hokkaido sika deer, and you may even hear the tapping of woodpeckers.
But this trail is most famous for the "bokke" which it is named after. The word "bokke" itself is derived from the Ainu word meaning "to boil". Found near the trail at certain points, the bokke are mud volcanoes, seeming to boil as volcanic gas bubbles up to the surface. As you near a bokke, you will smell the characteristic fragrance of sulfur contained in the volcanic gas, and feel the changes in ground temperature along the trail due to geothermal heat.
This is a unique experience to immerse yourself in the therapeutic forest air and experience volcanoes up close, all in one remarkable walk!
