Lake Akan
This caldera lake located within Akan-Mashu National Park is one of Hokkaido's iconic sightseeing attractions. Mt Oakan towers over the east bank, creating a magnificent scene which changes with the beauty of the four seasons. Lake Akan contains four islands, and is world-renowned as a habitat for the "marimo of Lake Akan", a rare species of spherical seaweed which is designated as a special natural monument of Japan. An onsen (hot spring) district lies along the south bank, attracting tourists and fishing enthusiasts alike.
