  • Sushi

    Sushi

The seafood of Kushiro, which boasts some of the largest catches in Japan, is incredibly fresh, making local sushi a true delicacy. It's also the only place you can enjoy sushi made from fish that absolutely must be fresh, such as Pacific saury, smelt, and herring. You won't find these items in Tokyo!

POINTWhy is Kushiro seafood so tasty?

The area off the eastern coast of Hokkaido is rich in nutrients thanks to converging warm (Kuroshio) and cold currents (Oyashio). It is teeming with plankton which is eaten by fish who live among the rough waves, resulting in firm, fatty, truly delicious seafood.

  • Soba

    Soba

The streets of Kushiro are lined with soba restaurants. Many Azumaya soba restaurants, which began with Chikurouen Azumaya Souhonten, serve green-colored soba which comes from chlorella in the noodles. So make sure to try these tasty noodles.

Spa-katsu is Kushiro's own unique style of spaghetti. This dish consists of a bed of spaghetti on a piping hot iron plate topped with a thick pork cutlet and meat sauce, making it the perfect soul food for chilly Kushiro. This tasty dish can be found at Western-style eateries around town including the original at Izumiya.

  • Zangi
